Convertors simplify power-supply system design
Surface-mount DC/DC convertors have a wide input voltage range of +9.0 to +26.4V, making them suitable for point-of-load use

An exceptionally wide input voltage range allows PXC5 DC/DC convertors from Lambda to cover more applications with fewer different models, allowing users to save money by reducing stocks. In addition, the convertors can be used to ensure the stable operation of equipment in applications - such as battery-powered systems - where the input supply voltage may be subject to large fluctuations.

Lambda’s new single- and dual-output PXC5 convertors are rated at 5W and are offered in versions to suit supplies in the ranges 9-36 and 18-75V.

In either case, the convertors automatically maintain their output voltage within +/-0.2% of its nominal value over the whole input voltage range.

Designed to be equally suitable for applications in telecommunications, data communications, industrial automation and process control, PXC5 convertors incorporate five-sided shielding.

At Southern Electronics 2007, Lambda is showcasing an extensive family of new products, ranging from tiny board-mounting DC/DC convertors to multi-kilowatt power supplies

When used with a suitably designed printed circuit board, this means that they generate exceptionally low levels of radiated emissions, making them an ideal choice for use in sensitive equipment.

PXC5 DC/DC convertors are approved to a wide range of national and international standards, including UL, CSA, EN and CE, making it easier for users to obtain regulatory approval for equipment which incorporates them, even when it is to be sold in multiple markets around the world.

Single output PXC5 DC/DC convertors are available with output voltages of 3.3, 5, 12 or 15V, while dual output models are offered with +/-5, +/-12 and +/-15V outputs.

Efficiency ranges from 73 to 82% depending on the model, and all types can be used at their full rated power over the temperature range -40 to +70C (higher with derating.) convertors in the PXC5 range use an industry-standard 24-pin DIL package and, measuring just 32 x 20 x 10mm, they are exceptionally economical in their use of valuable board real estate.

System-on-module fits space-constrained kit
Anders Electronics has a new, highly advanced system-on-module featuring Intel’s 915 Express chipset, a powerful Pentium M processor and dual-channel DDR2 RAM

Anders Electronics has extended its family of industrial-specification TFT displays with five new VGA (640 x 480) and QVGA (320 x 240) 5.7in LCD modules that address demanding environmental requirements without the cost of ownership penalties typically associated with robust, high-end LCDs. In addition to addressing the needs of new industrial applications, the 5.7in TFTs also provide for cost-effective migration of existing designs from conventional monochrome STN/CSTN technologies to full colour displays.

The new 5.7in industrial-specification full colour, transmissive TFT range from Anders Electronics comprises a VGA and a QVGA module with LED backlights, and a QVGA module that incorporates a CCFL backlight and is, therefore, suited to use where high brightness is essential.

Touchscreen variants of both QVGA modules are available, bringing the total number of new industrial-specification products to five.

Ideal for factory automation, process control, test and measurement, and other industrial HMI designs, the new displays will also suit a variety of ticketing and vending applications.

TFT modules cut industrial display costs
TFT LCDs operate from -20 to +70C, making them suitable for industrial applications, but without the price premium typically associated with extended temperature operation

All the modules are designed for an extended operating temperature range of -20 to +70C.

The new QVGA and VGA LED backlit modules offer brightness levels of 500 and 450cd/m2, respectively, and the CCFL backlit module delivers up to 700cd/m2.

Contrast ratios are 250:1 for the LED-backlit QVGA and VGA LCDs, rising to 300:1 for the CCFL-backlit QVGA product.

At around 20,000 hours, LED backlight lifetime is around twice that of similar products, and the CCFL backlight is rated for up to 50,000 hours.

These extended backlight ratings further contribute to low lifetime operation costs.

The new 5.7in modules join Anders Electronics’ existing 3.5 and 5in industrial-specification LCDs.

As with the other modules in the range, the new products deliver low purchase and lifetime ownership costs backed up with a commitment to long-term design continuity and production.

Power LEDs offer more white options
Expanded range of white emitters means the Luxeon K2 series is now available with correlated colour temperatures from 2670 to 10,000K

In tests, Philips Lumileds 1 x 1mm2 chip-based white LEDs, operating at just 350mA, delivered 136 lumen for a light source efficiency of 115 lumen/W at a correlated-colour-temperature (CCT) of 4685K. At 2000mA, Philips Lumileds white LEDs delivered 502 lumen at a corresponding 61 lumen/W. These LEDs are the first high-power LEDs to break through the 100 lumen/W mark and demonstrate the real potential of solid-state lighting technology.

Philips Lumileds, the creator of the 350mA high-power LED, continues its innovation by developing more powerful LEDs capable of long life when driven at 1000, 2000mA and higher.

This innovation improves the light efficacy and the light quality, all while offering the lower cost required by many applications.

Notable in the performance numbers is the CCT which is significantly lower than those typically reported.

White power LEDs overcome droop problem
Philips Lumileds today announced it has solved the problem of ‘droop’, a phenomenon common to white power LEDs in which efficacy decreases as current increases

These results clearly demonstrate Philips Lumileds’ progress in both light output and light quality.

Philips Lumileds achieved the record results for white LEDs by combining several new and innovative technologies it has developed.

The first devices using these technologies will be introduced in a new generation of products during this quarter.

These new technologies will continue to proliferate in new, and existing, products throughout the next 12-18 months.

Philips Lumileds breakthroughs in epitaxy, device physics, phosphor, and packaging technologies are critical to delivering the performance required of LEDs as they continue their growth into a preferred light source.

The light output performance announced today and available to the industry in the near future, is 17 times greater at the same power than was available in 1999 when Philips Lumileds introduced the first high-power LED.

While performance numbers continue to increase for low power LEDs, operating at lower currents such as 20mA, high-power LEDs are required to deliver the quality and quantity of light required for today’s and tomorrow’s lighting applications.

Belden has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase LTK Wiring of Hong Kong for US $195 million

The tests were performed using Solarflare’s newly developed 10Xpress 10GBase-T PHY evaluation boards. The validation trials were performed on a 100m Belden IBDN System 10GX channel in a worst-case, four-connector channel configuration (as specified in the TIA augmented Category 6 draft standard, which is currently under development in the TIA TR 42.7 subcommittee).

A seven-cable (six-around-one) configuration was used, with the Belden 10GX cables bundled every eight inches.

The 10Gbit/s Ethernet signals were generated using a traffic generator at the XAUI interface to the PHY evaluation boards.

The 10Gbit/s Ethernet signal was looped back at the far end transceiver and the receiver frames compared with the sending frames.

Live 10GBase-T traffic was transmitted simultaneously on all six neighbouring channels simulating a worst-case alien crosstalk environment.

There were no errors detected for the duration of the testing, which lasted over several hours.

The signal-to-noise ratio monitored during the testing was in excess of 25dB, providing a good margin over the standard.

This truly marks the first real life test to demonstrate the performance capability of 10GBase-T, using Solarflare’s 10GBase-T product over Belden’s 10GX augmented Category 6 cabling.

A real-life example of what this means would be the difference of transmitting high resolution pictures (600 dot/in) at 20 per minute at 1Gbit/s, compared with 200 per minute at 10Gbit/s.

The Belden IBDN System 10GX is not an improved or boosted Category 6 system, but a revolutionary new solution designed around a series of dynamic enabling technologies to ensure the highest level of alien crosstalk isolation and the best electrical performance during high frequency operation.
