Aesthetically coloured fabric-over-foam shielding gaskets complement the outside colour of a chassis.

Laird Technologies is responding to the changing needs of the consumer electronics market by unveiling its aesthetically coloured fabric-over-foam shielding gaskets to complement the outside colour of a chassis. The gaskets are an alternative to standard EMI shielding options for consumer gaming products, home computers, entertainment systems and medical equipment. Typically used in applications where the input/output connectors for video, audio or USBs are located in the front of the framework, the aesthetically coloured fabric-over-foam shielding gaskets are made from a tinted polyester film material adhered to the foam core.

Metallised fabric then bonds with the parallel edges of coloured polyester film material ensuring a contact path from the chassis to the component.

The colour range for the tinted polyester film that is laminated to the fabric is almost limitless but the typical colours include blue, red, green and grey.

‘Laird Technologies’ established leadership in EMI shielding allows us to provide the market with aesthetically coloured fabric-over-foam shielding gaskets that offer customers equivalent mechanical and electrical properties as a fully wrapped gasket’, said Joe Chen, Global Product Director, Laird Technologies.

‘This product camouflages gaskets that traditionally are visible on the outside of the chassis, creating a visually pleasing look for consumer gaming systems, home computer and entertainment equipment and medical apparatuses’.

According to Jim Feldhan, President, Semico Research, a semiconductor marketing and consulting research firm based in Phoenix, the consumer electronics that currently are driving market growth are: home networking, including wireless and storage, digital televisions, portable devices such as MP3s, cellular phones, cameras and satellite radios.

Other products like media centres, game consoles and set-top boxes also are pushing growth to a healthy double-digit range.

‘The consumer electronics market is the fastest moving sector within the technology industry right now’, Feldhan said.

‘End users crave quicker, smaller gadgets with more power, increased functionality and plenty of style’.

‘As a result, consumer electronic content in homes and businesses is on the rise as demand heats up’.

Laird Technologies continues to answer the call of the marketplace with its already field tested and proven, patent-pending aesthetically coloured fabric-over-foam shielding gasket technology that was used to produce more than 10 million gaskets during 2005.

Its easy-to-use design and low-compression forces also allow for use of lighter materials.

The W5Chassis is a novel ATX computer enclosure designed exclusively for wall and bulkhead mounting.
New from Chassis Plans is the W5Chassis family of rugged wall-mount and bulkhead-mount industrial PC computer enclosures. The W5Chassis is unique in the market, offering an ATX computer enclosure designed exclusively for wall and bulkhead mounting. Other wall-mount computers are simply reworked desktop or rack mount designs.

The W5Chassis is a clean paper design with no compromises in functionality.

The W5Chassis is perfect for a wide variety of applications where an office style computer does not provide appropriate protection and a 19in rack is not available.

The W5Chassis can be hung exposed on a wall in a factory, in a closet such as a security system, mounted on a drilling rig, and so forth.

When the door is closed, it does not look like a computer which has high appeal for theft and vandalism mitigation.

A lockable door protects the installed components from prying hands.

The door is sealed with fabric covered EMI gasket for both EMI and environmental sealing.

The high quality locking compression latch sets the EMI gasket when the door is closed.

Accessible behind the door is the power and reset switches as well as the power-on and drive activity LEDs.

A top cover protects the I/O cables and is interlocked with the door to prevent unauthorised access to the wiring.

Conduit knockouts are provided on both sides.

The W5Chassis is designed for harsh environments and includes four 1400 litre/min fans for cooling.

The fans are mounted in hot swap carriers for easy field service.

An optional fan monitoring board is available.

A large air filter is mounted on the exterior bottom of the enclosure for easy cleaning.

Access to the locked interior is not required for cleaning the filter.

The W5Chassis system is optimised for a variety of customer specified options, including in-door LCD control panels and displays up to 17in 1280 x 1024 in a vertical orientation.

Customer specified paint, logo and silk screening are available for private labelling.

‘Working with key customers in the offshore oil exploration industry, Chassis Plans was able to engineer and manufacture a very rugged system for use in harsh environments’, said David Lippincott, Founder and Chief Technologist of Chassis Plans.

‘Hurricane Katrina slammed the offshore drilling rigs and Chassis Plans’ wall mount enclosures were some of the few pieces of equipment to survive’.

The W5Chassis offers a unique blend of versatility and installed component protection in a low cost wall mount system.

The W5Chassis is in production.

OEM and quantity discounts are available.
