Murata ceramic resonators now out-perform crystal oscillators on stability, as demonstrated in the latest range available from TTI Europe. In recent years, the stability of Murata’s ceramic resonators has progressively approached that of crystal oscillators. It has now surpassed it, with the CSTCE-SK devices providing a replacement for +/-500ppm oscillators.

This latest progress erodes the only remaining advantage of crystal oscillators over ceramic resonators.

Oscillators have always been bigger, heavier and more power-hungry than resonators.

Other advantages for the Murata resonators include a rise time that is approximately 100 times faster.

There is also a load capacitor built-in, which reduces the PCB area requirement and the board-assembly workload.

Devices with this high stability are now in production for 24 and 30MHz frequencies, supporting applications such as the latest high-speed USB interfaces.

Higher frequencies will be available soon.

Reflow soldering and optical positioning are recommended for mounting these parts.
